Chris Munce celebrated his first winner in the Darley colours as Rarefied claimed an overdue stakes win at Randwick, upsetting some big names in the process.

Stablemate Offhanded was sent out the $3.70 favourite in Saturday's Group Three Up And Coming Stakes (1200m) with Rarefied a $17 chance.

Second elect Shellscrape ($3.80) took up his customary role in front and looked to have a winning break in the straight until Rarefied burst through to give chase.

Rarefied powered to the line a length in front of Shellscrape with Offhanded third while Delago Bolt ($5) spoilt his chances when he ran wide on the turn.

"It is a good result," trainer Peter Snowden said.

"We have always wanted to be able to race him back in the field and give him a chance to relax.

"It worked out well today.

"The level weights also helped and all in all it was a great job."

Snowden said Rarefied was unlikely to back up in next week's Golden Rose (1400m).

"His whole background is sprinting and I think at this stage that's what we will set him for," he said.

Munce was all smiles after the race.

"It's my first winner for Darley," he said.

"It was my first time on the horse but it all worked out as Peter hoped and he finished the race off well."

Delago Bolt's trainer Gary Portelli agreed with stewards the colt would have to trial before he raced again.

"The plan is to take him to Melbourne for a race up the straight at Flemington," Portelli said.

"He won't have to go around a turn which is a plus.

"He's never done anything like that before so it's a mystery."

Although Delago Bolt veered off he still managed to beat Judicial ($26) home after that horse put on a buckjumping display at the start and cost himself any chance.
