Paul Jones, the son of Canberra premiership-winning trainer Barbara Joseph, celebrated his first-ever winner as a trainer when Universal Boy charged home from near last on the turn to score a brilliant win at Randwick on Wednesday.

Jones, 40, juggles training with being his mother's stable foreman and couldn't believe his luck when Universal Boy's jockey Hugh Bowman weaved a seemingly impossible passage through a wall of horses in the straight.

Universal Boy, who was racing first-up from a 28-week spell and having his first start for his new trainer since being transferred from Joseph, found clear running near the 200 metres and flashed to the line to defeat the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kontiki Park by a head in the Clovelly Handicap (1150m).

Bowman was a replacement for Blake Shinn who was stood down from his riding commitments at Randwick because of a wrist injury.

"I've worked at Mum's stable for the last six years alongside her and have started at the bottom and worked my way up," Jones said.

"This is only my third horse at the races and I've only been training for four to six weeks, so it's a great thrill."

Jones said he and Joseph would commence a training partnership next season.

"This has just been a learning process for me and this is a horse that Mum and I part-own but it was my idea to bring him straight to town for this race and I'm proud of that," he said.

The trainer said the win would also have been a huge thrill for Universal Boy's trackwork rider and 10 per cent part-owner Kylie Blencowe.

"Kylie's loved this horse from day one when he was a two-year-old, so much so that we gave her a share in him, she'll be very happy with this," Jones said.

Universal Boy is a half-brother to the Joseph-trained Onthelookout who won at Randwick on New Year's Day.

Apprentices had a good day at Randwick with Brenton Avdulla landing a winning double on Money Rocks and Pagan Princess.

Tommy Berry also booted home a winner when he lifted the Clarry Conners-trained La Belle Chataigne home in the Bondi Handicap (1800m).

Bowman celebrated a winning treble after steering the Waterhouse-trained Modonna to an all-the-way win in the Coogee Handicap (1300m) with the ride another pick-up from the injured Shinn.

The premier hoop teamed up with the Tim Martin-trained Just A Touch to win the opening race of the day, the Bronte Handicap (1550m).

Martin enjoyed a winning brace when Chris Munce broke his long run of outs with a win aboard Monton in the Little Bay Handicap (1000m).

Meanwhile, Waterhouse's racing manager Robyn Hartney said stable rider Shinn expected to be fit to ride at Saturday's Magic Millions meeting at the Gold Coast where he rides Extreme Mover for his boss in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic.
