Brian Blackwell

For more than 40 years, Brian Blackwell has been one of the best-known names in Australian punting. He was editor of Practical Punting, the website and magazine, and for 29 years he edited the PPD Club, Practical Punting’s daily tipping service, as its head tipster.

Tens of thousands of punters have followed his selections over that time, through spring carnivals, autumn carnivals and every ordinary Saturday in between.

From a little black book to The Decider

When Brian stepped down from the PPD Club in December 2024, he didn’t step away from racing. For years he had kept a little black book of ideas: systems, form queries and staking plans he’d never had time to test. Now he did.

He spent months working through them. One question kept coming back: with hundreds of threads in every horse’s form, which one actually decides the race?

“Breeding, age, best trips, wet-track form, ratings, weights, barriers, rivals, luck in running, spells, jockeys, trainers, the market. Mind-boggling, really. I worked my way through every avenue of the form book, and then the answer came suddenly. The cobwebs were torn away. One factor is all it takes.”

One factor that cuts through the form

The Decider strips the form back to one key factor, one Brian believes has never been put in front of punters before. It is applied to every race, and only the runners it rates are selected.

The result is a short list of selections that are quick to follow and often found at prices other services miss, on city and country tracks.
