Mark Kavanagh has warned against expecting too much from Cox Plate favourite Whobegotyou when he resumes in the Group Two Liston Stakes at Caulfield.
Kavanagh said there was still a lot of improvement in the four-year-old at this stage of his preparation and that for him to figure in the money in Saturday's Caulfield feature would be a bonus.
"He is not a first-up proposition," Kavanagh said.
"He won his first start in a maiden at Geelong but since then he hasn't been a first-up horse.
"He hasn't run badly, but he's a big, solid horse and just needs a run or two."
Whobegotyou was beaten in photo-finishes at his other two starts when resuming.
He was fancied after a 10-week break when Sugar Babe pipped him in the McNeil Stakes in August last year while he started favourite against older horses when second to Rockpecker carrying 58.5kg first-up in the Listed Food And Wine Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in March.
On both occasions Whobegotyou produced eye-catching finishing bursts and Kavanagh is hoping the Street Cry gelding will again be running on strongly.
"If he gets into the money it would be good because I know how much improvement is in him," Kavanagh said.
Only unbeaten mare Typhoon Tracy ($2.50) is ahead of Whobegotyou ($3.50) in the early TAB Sportsbet market.
Whobegotyou, who is $6 favourite for the Cox Plate, last raced at Caulfield when he trounced the 2008 Caulfield Guineas field by more than three lengths.
He hasn't won since but was second in the Victoria Derby last November and in Sydney last autumn was second in the Phar Lap Stakes and a luckless third to Vision And Power in the Doncaster Mile.
He was spelled after finishing ninth to Pompeii Ruler in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) but Kavanagh loves what he sees in the horse this campaign.
"He has furnished out nicely and has had good solid groundwork," Kavanagh said.
Thousand Guineas winner Gallica ($18) and Australian Guineas winner Heart Of Dreams ($5.50) represent trainer Mick Price who is trying for his third Liston win in four years.
He won it with Pompeii Ruler in 2006 and with Light Fantastic last year but expects it will be a hard to get past Typhoon Tracy on Saturday.
"Gallica will run well and so will Heart of Dreams but she (Typhoon Tracy) may be too good," Price said.
