Whobegotyou is set to start the shortest-priced Victoria Derby favourite for 36 years, with bookmakers saying the money is for the Mark Kavanagh-trained gelding to the exclusion of all other runners.

Whobegotyou remained steady at $1.55 with TAB Sportsbet after drawing barrier four of 15 runners in the 2500m blue riband event at Flemington on Saturday.

"The money for him suggests it's a one-horse race," Betstar's Alan Eskander said.

"On Saturday night we took a bet of $50,000 at $1.75 and another bet of $50,000 at $1.70 and he has been at $1.60 with us since."

He said Whobegotyou had also been coupled up heavily in Victoria Derby-Melbourne Cup doubles with Septimus at $8.

Eskander suggested the barrier might not be the best draw for Whobegotyou who likes to settle back in his races.

"He likes to race wide and doesn't like having horses on his outside, so barrier four may end up in our favour," he said.

"Four is not diabolical for him though as he has plenty of time to get out into clear running."

The last horse to start at a shorter quote than what is currently on offer for Whobegotyou was Sobar ($1.35) who won the 1972 Caulfield Cup before being beaten by Dayana in the Derby.

The last to win at shorter than $1.55 was Sir Blink ($1.50) in 1958, a year after champion Tulloch won by eight lengths at $1.10.

In more recent times the shortest-priced winners have been Red Anchor ($1.75) in 1984 and Helenus ($1.90) in 2002.

"We wanted something around the middle, six to eight would have been nice, but we're pretty happy with four," owner Lawrence Eales said.

Whobegotyou has won five of his seven starts by sweeping around the field, whereas his two defeats have come at Caulfield when racing on the inside.

He looked a certainty beaten when edged out by the filly Sugar Babe in the McNeil Stakes (1200m) first-up on August 30 and luck wasn't with him again when seventh to Fernandina in the Guineas Prelude (1400m).

Whobegotyou, by 2002 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry, has since captured the imagination with his dominant victories in the Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley, Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and the AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley last Saturday.

"The latest I've heard is that he's pulled up fine since the weekend and he's doing well," Eales said.

Norman Robinson Stakes winner Pre Eminence drew gate one with Tuscany View in two and Carnero on the immediate inside of Whobegotyou in three.

AAMI Vase runner-up Buffett drew five with Larry's Never Late in six.

Geelong Classic winner The Tiger came up with 10 with New Zealand gelding My Scotsgrey drawing 13 and Rebel Raider the outside.
