Golden Rose runner-up Squamosa will trial at Warwick Farm on Friday as he starts the serious part of his build-up towards a Magic Millions Trophy start.

The talented colt made a big impression through the winter in Sydney winning his first three races before turning in a brave effort for second in the Group One Golden Rose (1400m) on August 28.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse sent the son of Not A Single Doubt for a spell straight after that race and the three-year-old has returned to work in fine order, according to Tulloch Lodge's Mark Webbey.

"He'll probably trial at Warwick Farm on Friday and we're very happy with him," Webbey said.

"He's probably heading towards the Magic Millions, he's not a horse that needs to be rushed but his goal is the Millions at this time.

"Even a race like the Australian Guineas, I think a mile will suit him."

The $1 million Magic Millions Trophy (1400m) will be run on the January 15 while the Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) is at Flemington on March 5.

Webbey said Squamosa and stablemate Brightexpectations had "definitely developed" in their time off.

Brightexpectations was spelled after two unplaced runs in August in the San Domenico Stakes and the Up And Coming Stakes.

"I think they'll both be in for good summer and autumn preparations," Webbey said.

Brightexpectations won a 740-metre barrier trial by 4-3/4 lengths at Randwick last Friday and the plan is to try to have him ready to go first-up in the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes (1200m) on December 5.

Webbey said the Wyong race would come around too soon for Squamosa with the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) on December 18 a possible first-up option.
