Rock Of Gibraltar filly Red Belly Black is Magic Millions-bound after making an impressive debut at Flemington.

One of the cheapest horses in David Hayes' stable, the chestnut repaid the $25,000 she cost owners Scott and Rachel Perrin with victory in the Western Health Sponsors Plate (1100m).

Ridden by Glen Boss, Red Belly Black ($3.50 fav) was wayward at the back of the field but hit the line strongly to win by a half-length from Ballarat debut winner Lady Davinci ($9) with Dutchy's Lass ($5) a long head way third.

Hayes said that while not the best juvenile in his yard, Red Belly Black showed promise in a jumpout and he treated her debut as a "$70,000 trial".

"She is eligible for the Magic Millions so we thought we'd better earn some prizemoney as the race is not far away," Hayes said.

"We put her in this race instead of trialling her again and she did the right thing and qualified.

"She was pretty impressive but is still pretty green."

Hayes said that Red Belly Black would not have another run before the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 9.

He said that she would probably be better suited racing around a turn as she got a bit lost down the Flemington straight.

"At Lindsay Park around the corner she is very good and she will improve a lot from this," Hayes said.

He said she would race in winkers on the Gold Coast.

"The way she wobbled around today she needs them," Hayes said.

"She has to improve a bit for the Magic Millions but I think she will."

Boss agreed that there was a lot of upside to the filly.

"She has been rushed into the system but she's willing to do the right thing," Boss said.

"Her fitness level they said was 80 per cent and she looks and feels that way at the moment."
