Trainer Rick Hore-Lacy is concerned a wide draw may thwart Pinnacles' prospects of winning the Anniversary Vase at Caulfield as he prepares for another crack at the $2 million Doncaster at Randwick.
Pinnacles drew barrier 15 in the 1400m Listed race which attracted a field of 14 plus four emergencies.
"We're disappointed about the barrier on Saturday. We'll probably go back and ride for luck and see what happens," Hore-Lacy said.
Hore-Lacy said he was hoping for a win in Saturday's $100,000 event which could earn Pinnacles a small penalty for the Doncaster at Randwick on April 18.
"If he doesn't win on Saturday he might not get a run in the Doncaster," he said.
The five-year-old is currently equal 27th with Group Two Blamey Stakes winner Largo Lad in the order of entry for the 1600m feature which has a limit of 20 plus four emergencies, and looks likely to make the cut.
The Fuji Kiseki gelding was ridden by Shane Dye when he came from last in a field of 20 to run third to Triple Honour in the 2008 Doncaster.
Brad Rawiller takes the Anniversary Vase mount replacing Craig Williams who is in Dubai to ride Niconero in Sunday morning's (AEDT) Dubai Duty Free (1777m).
Rawiller has ridden Pinnacles twice for two seconds including when beaten a nose by Saturday's rival Skiddaw Peak in the 2008 Echuca Cup (1400m).
Hore-Lacy said if Pinnacles didn't go to Sydney he would stay in Melbourne for the Group Three Victoria Hcp (1400m) at Caulfield on Easter Saturday.
And the option is there to take him back to Queensland for a crack at the Stradbroke Hcp (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 6, a race in which he finished 17th to Mr Baritone last year.
Pinnacles has won twice in 12 starts since last year's Doncaster, taking out the Listed Glasshouse Hcp (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast last June and his latest outing when he scored over 1400m at Flemington on March 14.
Two starts back he was disappointed for a run in the straight when third to Rockpecker and Doncaster $6.50 second favourite Whobegotyou in the Listed Melbourne Food and Wine Plate (1400m) at Flemington on March 7.
Pinnacles is a $35 shot for the Doncaster.
Among his apposition on Saturday are Cox Plate runner-up Zipping, Caulfield Stakes winner Douro Valley, Falaise, Queensland Oaks and Derby winner Riva San, Fire In The Night and Sound Journey.
Zipping, who hasn't raced since making it back-to-back wins in the Group Two Sandown Classic (2400m) last spring, has to shoulder 62kg in what is likely to be his only start for the autumn.
Douro Valley, who was beaten a long head by Zipping when runner-up in the Sandown Classic, will carry 61kg.
He hasn't raced since finishing ninth to Doctor Dino in the Hong Kong Vase (2400m) at Sha Tin in December.
