Five-year-old Pinnacles will be ridden by Chris Munce after defying the ballot for the second successive year to make the Doncaster Mile field at Randwick.

Rick Hore-Lacy was thrilled to get another crack at Saturday's Group One feature with the chestnut who a year ago emerged from obscurity to finish third at $61 to Triple Honour and Casino Prince.

Pinnacles is again a long shot at $35 with TAB Sportsbet but Hore-Lacy said he couldn't be happier with the gelding who leaves for Sydney on Thursday.

"He is probably going better than he was last year," Hore-Lacy said.

"I rang up Randwick this morning and they said he was definitely in the race so now all we need is a decent barrier."

Last year Pinnacles copped the visitors draw when he drew barrier 19 but despite the setback was beaten only 1-1/2 lengths when ridden by Shane Dye.

"He's had pretty much the same campaign as last year but the barrier will be key on Saturday," Hore-Lacy said.

"He's a huge chance if he draws a decent gate.

"If he gets that and gets a reasonable run in the race he has got to be amongst them again."

Last Saturday Pinnacles turned in a sparkling Doncaster trial when he flashed home from last in the 16-horse Group Three Victoria Handicap at Caulfield to finish fifth to Masked Assassin.

"It was almost, if not, the run of the day," Hore-Lacy said. "I know Steven Arnold (his jockey) was pretty impressed."

Pinnacles' low-key build up to the Doncaster also included a third to Skiddaw Peak in the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) at Caulfield on March 28, two weeks after beating Sound Journey in the Family Day Handicap (1400m) at Flemington.

Hore-Lacy said any rain would be a bonus for Pinnacles whose has a win and a third from two heavy track starts.

"If the sting is out of the track it won't hurt him at all," Hore-Lacy said.
