Leading Warwick Farm trainer Guy Walter says he is optimistic about the future of the racecourse following Monday's announcement of a major redevelopment.

The Australian Jockey Club (AJC) will spent $25 million revamping facilities at the track in south western Sydney which houses the giant training arms of Darley and Patinack Farm along with the medium sized stables of Walter, Clarry Conners, Joe Pride and others.

The plans for redevelopment ended speculation Warwick Farm would be utilised as purely a training centre amid hopes to revitalise big race days featuring the Warwick Stakes and Chipping Norton Stakes, both of which were run at Randwick this year.

The biggest loss to the trainers will be the area known as Coopers Paddock which is currently used for exercising horses.

Sydney Water, which operates a major sewerage and recycling plant adjacent to Coopers Paddock, has threatened to deny access to its land thereby cutting it off from the Warwick Farm village.

"It will be sad to lose Coopers Paddock which has been a unique facility at Warwick Farm," Walter said.

"At the same time this is going to make Warwick Farm a major centre and hopefully lead to more race meetings.

"It is great to think we can have big races like the Warwick Stakes and Chipping Norton Stakes again.

"I hope it's exciting times ahead."

William Inglis and Son has entered into an agreement with the AJC to purchase 9.5 hectares of land on which it will build a state-of-the art sale ring with bars, restaurants and stables for up to 1,000 horses.

AJC chairman Ron Finemore said the Club would refurbish and enclose the main grandstand, cover the betting ring, rebuild the race day stalls, renovate the existing tie-up stalls and add new tie-up stalls to replace those that were removed to make way for the new stables built for World Youth Day and now used by Patinack Farm trainers.
