Darley trainer Peter Snowden has claimed the first Victorian two-year-old race of the season with Sepoy living up to his impressive barrier trial form in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington.

The handsome chestnut colt, by Elusive Quality, out of a Sydney placed sister to Queensland Derby winning filly Camarena, won a Cranbourne barrier trial (800m) in 49.72s on September 20.

With Mark Zahra in the saddle, Sepoy ($2.80 fav) settled fifth of the seven runners in the 1000m straight race before scoring a comfortable length win over Delago's Lad ($10) with Stop Sookin ($26) was a half-length away third.

"He didn't quite get the cover I was hoping to get. He was a little bit keen early," Snowden said.

"But he relaxed and showed a good turn of foot. He was quite strong on the line.

"He's as tough as nails, a runner, and we identified him, he came through the system quite early when and he looked the type to target a race like this with.

"He does everything right, he's a precocious type and right now you need a horse that hits the ground and can run.

"It's early days yet, but he's an honest horse. He's a winner today and has done his job."

Zahra believes the colt has a good future.

"I really liked him. I don't think he's just a two-year-old," he said.

"Once he relaxed it was just a matter of me waiting to press the button and he did the rest.

"Credit to the horse, he was able to face the breeze the whole way and pick up and kick towards the end.

"He had trialled really well. His work's been good. I expected him to run well and he did."
