Sepoy surprised punters but not the Peter Snowden stable when he impressively took out the colts and geldings Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield.

The Peter Moody-trained colt Golden Archer, previously unbeaten in two starts at Flemington and Caulfield, dominated betting as the $1.70 favourite.

However the Sheikh Mohammed-owned colt Sepoy ($8), ridden by Mark Zahra, was far too good on the day, trailing the leader Bossdon City ($5.50) before racing clear for a 3-1/2-length win over Grand Britannia ($18) with Golden Archer a half-length back third.

"He's a quality horse, he's always showed us nice ability," Snowden said.

"The only downer he's had on him is the quality of the opposition he beat at his first start."

The Elusive Quality colt had beaten Delago's Lad in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) at Flemington at his debut on October 3 before being sent to the paddock.

"But I kept thinking was 'All you can do is win' and he did that and he did it well. He's pleased us no end since he's been back in work and trialled quite well 10 days ago," Snowden said.

"He's a very relaxed horse who as you saw today has got the ability to jump and put himself there and he relaxes so well.

"When Mark gave him a squeeze at the furlong (200m) he responded really well and he had that race won a long way out.

"He's climbed the ladder pretty quickly. He's done a great job, the time was there and the way he won was great.

"Looking at the field you can see plenty of improvement in a lot of the horses but I've got no doubt there is plenty to come from this bloke as well."

Snowden said Sepoy would have his next run in the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) next Saturday week, two weeks before the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), both at Caulfield.

Zahra was most impressed with Sepoy.

"He's got such a stunning turn of foot it's going to take a good horse to beat him," he said.

Leading trainer Peter Moody said filly One Last Dance had improvement in her experience-wise after she came from a wide barrier to win the fillies Preview (1000m).

The daughter of Encosta De Lago, raced by the Fairway Thoroughbreds Syndicate managed by John Camilleri, remained unbeaten on Wednesday after scoring by 4-1/4 lengths on debut at Moonee Valley over 955m on December 17.

"She's still learning to be a racehorse and will go on to the Prelude on her way to the Blue Diamond," Moody said.

"She's still green, fitness isn't the issue but she needs further experience."

Ridden by top jockey Luke Nolen, One Last Dance ($2.40 fav) edged out the Tim Martin-trained Anevay ($6) by a nose with the Snowden-trained Graskop ($6.50) 1-3/4 lengths away third.

Nolen described the win as "soft" despite the narrow margin.

"She doesn't know a whole lot about it yet," Nolen said.

"She's quite brilliant at home and so she hasn't learnt much as she's never off the bridle."
