The future of grand campaigner Precise Timing will be on the line in the Listed Frank Underwood Cup at Rosehill on Saturday.
Precise Timing is having his 88th start in the 2000-metre feature and trainer Ross Stitt said it could be the nine-year-old's final appearance.
"If he can't hack it with them then we'll have to seriously look at retiring him," Stitt said.
"I just want to give him one more go over some ground and see if he's got anything left.
"It's the fittest I've had him for a while and he couldn't be more ready to tackle this race."
Precise Timing, who has won more than $900,000, scored his biggest win in the Group Three Launceston Cup (2400m) three years ago.
And Stitt's trophy cabinet has plenty more silverware courtesy of Precise Timing with Cups from Gunnedah, South Grafton, Muswellbrook, Port Macquarie (twice), Toowoomba, Lismore (twice) and Inverell.
Stitt said the decision to retire Precise Timing would not be taken lightly.
"He's been an absolute blessing for our stable and it will be a sad day when we do have to pull the pin on his career but that's the way it goes," Stitt said.
Precise Timing's last victory was in January last year in the Inverell Cup (1400m) and he comes into Saturday's Cup after only beating one runner home at Taree in a 1600-metre race on January 2.
"He just can't go with those milers anymore, they've just got too much speed for him, but the only time he's been over ground in a while was a couple of starts back and he ran a nice race," Stitt said.
Two starts back at Tamworth over 2100 metres Precise Timing hit the line strongly to finish a half-length second to Are You Joeken.
"The horse looks a treat, hopefully he can measure up for us," Stitt said.
The Johann Quatz gelding has been given 53kg, the lightest weight he has carried since 52kg when second to Bush Honey in the Group Three Gosford Cup (2100m) four years ago.
Last-start Tattersall's Club Cup (2000m) winner Tommifrancs from the Gerald Ryan yard has the topweight of 58kg.
