Trainer Gary Portelli has big plans for regally-bred two-year-old Mirrasalo who makes her debut at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, but he is in no hurry this campaign with the filly he believes will develop into an AJC Australian Oaks contender.

Mirrasalo, a $700,000 yearling purchase, runs in the Catalan Opening Handicap (1200m).

The Redoute's Choice filly is out of the New Zealand stakeswinner St. Therese who ran fourth in the 2001 Group Two Moonee Valley Oaks (2040m).

Apprentice Tommy Berry has the ride on Mirrasalo who comes into the race after two barrier trials including a win at Warwick Farm on January 27 over 800 metres.

Tackling the likes of Big Birdie, who trainer Chris Waller will be hoping can land his first winner for prominent owner Bob Ingham, Portelli is expecting the opposition to be too slick for Mirrasalo on Wednesday.

"She's got the pedigree to be an Oaks horse and has already showed us in her trials that she will appreciate more ground," Portelli, who trained 2007 AJC Australian Oaks winner Rena's Lady, said.

"I'm not expecting too much on debut. I just want her to get a bit of dirt in her face and let her see what racing is all about.

"She's a big, lean looking thing and I'm keen to put her out after this and give her time to develop, we're in no hurry with her."

Portelli said a tilt at the final leg of the two-year-old triple crown, the Champagne Stakes (1600m) on April 25, was highly unlikely for Mirrasalo.

"I think it would be too much too soon for her and I'm more inclined to give her a good spell after this and give her time, she's a lovely horse with plenty of exciting options ahead of her," he said.

Pre-post markets have Big Birdie the $3 favourite.

The Exceed And Excel filly ran 5-1/4 lengths second to early Golden Slipper favourite More Joyous on debut at Rosehill on January 17.

Mirrasalo is locked with the John O'Shea-trained Military Gal on the second line of betting at $6.

Military Gal ran fifth to Golden Slipper contender Marquardt on debut at Rosehill on January 31.
