The decision to take the plunge and start debutante Matignon on a wet track proved a winning one for trainer Guy Walter and the Darley operation.

One of 11 fillies Walter trains for Sheikh Mohammed, Matignon did her bit to further cement Lonhro's position as this season's champion sire.

Sent out the $3.40 favourite based on a recent barrier trial win, Matignon got back early but gathered in the leaders on the heavy track to beat Isle Be Ready by a half neck in Monday's Moore Park Maiden Plate (1000m).

"It's not ideal having her first start on a wet track but it isn't going to dry out," Walter said.

"We took a punt and brought her here today and it was lovely to see her win.

"She has worked in the wet and the race was only 1000 metres.

"It was pleasing to see her come from behind because she led when she won the trial."

Kerrin McEvoy, number one rider for Darley which has the majority of its horses with Peter Snowden, predicted a bright future for the two-year-old.

"She was a bit green on the bend but once I got her into the straight she knew her job and knew what she had to do," McEvoy said.

Walter said long term plans were still undecided but Matignon would have at least one more start this winter.

"She will go to a Saturday race," he said.

"Unfortunately she will have to run against the colts which is not ideal but she has plenty of ability.

"She has improved this time in and is just getting better and better."

McEvoy, meanwhile, is still mulling over whether to appeal a suspension handed out by Brisbane stewards on Saturday for his winning ride on Benfica in the TJ Smith Stakes at Eagle Farm.

As it stands, the ban means he will miss the ride on Doomben 10,000 winner Beaded in the final Group One race of the season, the Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm on June 25.
