A decision to miss this Saturday's Vain Stakes with Caulfield Guineas aspirant Briefed in preference to running in a lesser event at Sandown on Wednesday paid off for trainer Enver Jusufovic.

Briefed powered home from 11th at the 400m to win the Caranna Hcp (1000m) named after the 1955 AJC Derby, Rosehill Guineas and Caulfield Guineas winner.

Jusufovic is hoping Briefed can make it to the $1 million Guineas on October 10, although he's not sure the Hemingway gelding will get the 1600m trip.

"He's shows potential. I thought there would be plenty of speed on but he surprised me that he got as far back as what he did," the Cranbourne trainer said.

"I'm extremely pleased with his effort today."

Ridden by Damien Oliver, Briefed ($4.80) got through the heavy going to score by a half-neck from Miss Twoicee ($11) with Rue Maple ($4.80) a long neck away third.

"I was considering the Vain. To me what he shows on the training track suggests he's capable, but you've got to do it race day," Jusufovic said.

"Wise heads said start small so there is plenty of time."

Oliver was one who advised Jusufovic to dodge the Vain saying it would be a cracking race.

"The Caulfield Guineas is the target. He might be a bit brilliant for that but the way he raced today ..." Jusufovic said.

"He's not 100 per cent wound up at this stage but he comes to hand fairly quickly and I'm mindful of that."

Briefed landed his first city success on Wednesday and took his record to two wins and a third from four starts.

Jusufovic said Briefed may go to the Group Three HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 29, but he would be guided by Oliver.

"You've got to have a plan. If he's going to run the mile (1600m) terrific. He didn't get the 1400 metres last time but it was at the end of a long preparation," he said.

"He's still growing. He's going to grow another hand I think. He's a very nice horse."

Oliver replaced heavyweight jockey Mark Flaherty who is taking his annual winter break and doesn't return to riding until later in the month.
