Anthony Cummings will take a leaf out of his famous father's book when he starts Nothin' Leica Cat in the City Tattersalls Club Cup at Randwick on Saturday.

Cummings is hoping the Queensland Oaks runner-up can win the Listed feature to bump her up the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup on November 3.

Bart Cummings has used the same strategy successfully in the past with the likes of Grandmaster (1997) and Perpetual Check (1998), who both earned Melbourne Cup starts by winning Saturday's 2400 metre race.

"It's a race that usually attracts a one or one-and-a-half kilo penalty and that might be enough to get her up the order and into the race," Anthony Cummings said.

"Then it would just be a matter of what her final lead up might be and this could conceivably be her final lead up.

"We will have to play it by ear, see what she does on Saturday, how she recovers from it and how she travels."

Nothin' Leica Cat is one of 19 entries for the City Tattersalls Cup along with Metropolitan Handicap runner-up Lodge The Deeds, Queensland Cup winner Cape Breton, New Zealander Indikator and Hume who is also entered for the David Jones Cup (2000m) at Caulfield on the same afternoon.

The Cummings-trained mare, who will be ridden by Craig Agnew, finished sixth to Speed Gifted in the Metropolitan after getting back to last from her wide gate.

The effort wasn't enough to earn her a Caulfield Cup start as originally hoped but Cummings saw plenty of positives in Nothin' Leica Cat's Metropolitan performance.

"Her finishing speeds were among the best in the race and some of her sectionals were better than the winner's," said Cummings, who will still be represented in Saturday's Caulfield Cup by Zavite and Red Lord while Miss Darcey is borderline to gain a start.

"She hit the line really well and from a wide gate she just had to get too far back to be really competitive.

"But there was a lot of merit in what she did and hopefully she will get a drier track on Saturday and a better barrier."

The Tattersalls Cup is one of three Listed races on the Randwick program along with the City Tattersalls Lightning Hcp (1100m) and Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) for three-year-olds.

There are 20 entries for the Lightning including speedy mare Belong To Many, Healy Stakes winner News Alert, Missile winner Teasing and classy four-year-old Youthful Jack.

Heritage Stakes victor Stryker heads nominations for the Brian Crowley along with Teasing's Tim Martin-trained stablemate Indian Ocean.

The winner of the Magic Night Stakes during the autumn, Indian Ocean will be having her first start since finishing down the track in the Golden Slipper won by Phelan Ready.
