The versatility of leading sire More Than Ready was on display at a soggy Canterbury with Toulon Bay and More Than Great producing dominant wins on Wednesday.

More Than Ready has produced the past two Golden Slipper winners, Sebring and Phelan Ready.

He has also sired a Victoria Derby winner in Benicio and his sons and daughters are adept on all types of ground.

The Matthew Smith-trained Toulon Bay scored a welcome metropolitan win for the Warwick Farm trainer while the David Payne-trained debutant More Than Great lived up to his favouritism.

Toulon Bay is one of two horses Smith has for Ron Croghan who gained national recognition as the owner of star three-year-old Samantha Miss who was trained by Kris Lees to three Group One victories.

"It's great to train a winner for Mr Croghan who has been a great supporter of my stable," Smith said.

"Toulon Bay won well on the wet track at Newcastle last start.

"I haven't had many runners in town recently. There's no use bringing them if they are not going to be competitive but I was sure she would be."

Smith also had a good luck charm in 17-month-old daughter Claudia who was on hand to watch the win.

"She has a 100 per cent strike rate when she comes to the races," he said.

Ridden by Corey Brown, Toulon Bay overhauled the leaders in the Freeway's Friday Lunch Show Handicap (1550m) to beat Gathering Light by 1-1/4 lengths.

More Than Great's win was even more comprehensive with Nash Rawiller bringing the two-year-old with a well-timed run in the straight to win the Freeway Republic Beer Handicap (1200m) by 4-1/2 lengths from Sutton Princess.

"He is a very nice horse and always has been," Payne said.

"He won his only trial but it was in a very slow time so it was hard to line up.

"I was confident he would handle the ground because the More Than Readys all seem to.

"He may have another run this preparation and I think there are some nice races in store over the spring."

Brown's win on Toulon Bay was countered by a double from Hugh Bowman who stretched his premiership lead to two in what is shaping as a battle to the wire.

Bowman left Canterbury on 72 wins with the leading pair well clear of nearest rival Glyn Schofield on 55.

Victory by Renaissance in the opening race lifted trainer Peter Snowden to 68 Sydney wins for the season, just 7-1/2 behind Gai Waterhouse.
