WITH a little more than 24 hours to go before her unbeaten two-year-old filly Military Rose was to tackle the $2 million Magic Millions Classic, Gold Coast trainer Gillian Heinrich's mind was on the sale ring and the performance of the progeny of one particular stallion at the MM sales complex yesterday, reports The Age.
It says: But Heinrich's interest was as a seller, not as a buyer, as the first yearling crop of her group 2-winning sprinter All Bar One were to go under the hammer for the first time. ''We've bought a few at the sales but this is the first time we're here as sellers. It's quite exciting, actually. I just hope the buyers like his offspring as much as we do,'' she said.
Heinrich believes there is plenty for buyers to like about All Bar One's progeny, describing them as ''strong-shouldered, big-bummed individuals a little taller than their dad but very much in the mould of sprinters'', and with more than $2 million in prizemoney on offer for these yearlings in next year's MM Classic, a body built for speed should attract plenty of interest.
Today, Heinrich will be hoping that Military Rose, a filly she spied at the 2009 MM sales and for whom she paid $155,000, maintains her unbeaten record and continues to surprise her trainer and jockey with her unexpected improvement.
After the filly's four-length trial win at the Gold Coast, Heinrich was confident Military Rose had the ability and speed to pick up a few races as a two-year-old. And while she has done that and more than covered her purchase price with three victories from as many starts, Heinrich has been surprised by the manner in which the filly has gone about her business.
''She won her first two races sitting up on the speed and led all the way to win her second race [the listed Calaway Gal Stakes], so we thought we had a pretty handy speed horse, if nothing else,'' she said. ''But when she was slow out of the barriers in the McLachlan [Stakes] and settled midfield I was actually panicking a fair bit - she'd never been that far back.''
Sent out a firming $3.50 favourite to claim her second listed race on end, Military Rose unleashed a withering turn of foot to claim victory, putting an end to Heinrich's theory that her strength was her early speed.
''Stathi [Katsidis] came back to scale and said, 'Gillian, I found a gear I didn't even know she had'. He was completely stunned and so was I. It gives you hope that she can take the next step and I just hope that she finds that gear again,'' Heinrich said.
Sydneysider Ambers Waltz heads the market for today's feature race at $4.60 but heavy support for Military Rose and fellow Queenslander Spirit Of Boom have Heinrich confident the locals can make their presence felt against the southern onslaught. If successful, a tilt at the Golden Slipper is not out of the question.
