The addition of blinkers and a reunion with Nash Rawiller gave Zavite the impetus he needed to get back on the winners' list for the first time in more than a year when he took out the Australia Day Cup at Randwick.

After a disappointing spring, Zavite was back to his free-rolling best in the 2400-metre feature to score his first victory since the 2007 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Melbourne.

Blinkers have proven to be a successful formula with the progeny of Zabeel and helped Zavite ($5) stroll to a 2-3/4 length win over Come On Cugat ($8.50) with $3.30 favourite Macknuckle a neck third.

"He was happy out in front and I just let him go," Rawiller said.

"I saw Macknuckle there with me but once we got into the straight I thought we had it pretty much under control.

"He is a nice staying horse and it's great to win on him again."

Zavite brought up the second leg of a winning double for trainer Anthony Cummings after Miss Darcey scored in an earlier support race, the La Perouse Handicap.

That race began in dramatic fashion when favourite Boca Chita ($3) was pulled up by Blake Shinn after her saddle slipped and she buckjumped for several strides as he desperately tried to control her.

Cummings spent Australia Day across the Tasman trying to buy a few more New Zealand stayers at the Karaka sale in Auckland.

Foreman Barry Smith said Zavite was likely to stay in work with the autumn in mind.

"I'm pretty sure now he's won he will be carrying on," Smith said.

"There was a little bit of give in the track today which helped him and he also got some weight relief from the topweight."

Topweight was Tommifrancs who was aiming to complete a unique summer series of staying wins for Gerald Ryan and Glyn Schofield who had combined with Ready To Lift in the Christmas and Summer Cups before taking the Tattersall's Club Cup and Underwood Cup with her stablemate.

But it wasn't to be with Tommifrancs fourth under his 60kg, four kilograms more than the winner.

Ryan said Tommifrancs would have a few days in the paddock to rest up before the Listed Parramatta Cup (2000m) on February 21.

"He is a horse who needs a fast pace on and is perhaps better suited to 2000 metres at this stage of his career," Ryan said.
