Former Victorian-based mare Moonsong is starting to find her feet in Sydney and is expected run a big race on the Kensington track at Randwick on Thursday.

The Redoute's Choice four-year-old runs in the Rosebery Handicap (1550m) at what will be her second start for Gai Waterhouse.

Formerly trained by David Hayes, Moonsong finished two lengths second to Lighthouses over 1400 metres at Newcastle on March 7.

Waterhouse's racing manager Robyn Hartney said the mare was beginning to feel more at home in her new surroundings at Tulloch Lodge.

"At Newcastle she jumped out to the lead in the straight but she got tired and got on to the Melbourne leg and in the end that cost her, but it was a very encouraging run," Hartney said.

Tim Clark is booked to ride Moonsong on Thursday but Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Blake Shinn has been riding her in plenty of her work and has been impressed.

Moonsong, who is part-owned by Australian Jockey Club committeeman Bob Guth, galloped over 1400 metres on Tuesday with Shinn aboard.

"Her work has been very good since Newcastle and Blake was very happy with her latest gallop and thinks she will be very competitive," Hartney said.

"She's really starting to thrive going the Sydney way and we're very happy with the way she's settled in."

Moonsong is rated an $11 chance in pre-post markets while the Bart Cummings-trained Very Grand is the $3 favourite.

Very Grand ran seventh to Hot Danish last start in the Listed Wiggle Quality (1400m) at Randwick on March 7.

Group-placed mare Permission To Land from the John O'Shea yard is the second favourite at $4 ahead of the Jack Denham-trained Matchless at $6.

Permission To Land dead-heated for third with Princess Marizza in the Inglis Mile at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day in October last year.
