Detroit Song faces his toughest test in Saturday's Listed Tattersalls Club Cup at Randwick, and if he passes it a lofty autumn campaign awaits.
And trainer Rick Worthington has no doubts the lightly-raced five-year-old will run the 2400 metres in the $100,000 feature.
"It's a crucial race for him. If I'm going to target races like the BMW and the Queen Elizabeth he has to go through this race to put some legs under him for next preparation," Worthington said.
The son of Carnegie has one win from five starts and has been placed three times.
Two starts back he justified his short price of $2.10 when he scored by two lengths at Randwick on the Kensington track over 1800 metres on September 23.
He comes into the race off a fourth to Sussman at Warwick Farm over 2200 metres on October 6.
"It was disappointing in that he got squeezed up, lost balance and momentum and didn't get going until the last 50 metres but the run still had merit," Worthington said.
"This is his first prep and we'll find out tomorrow how much juice is left in the lemon but he's a horse I have no doubt will win some nice races over distance."
Worthington said Detroit Song was still immature and learning what racing was all about.
"He's a bit weak through the back and is still developing his galloping action, so he's an exciting prospect," Worthington said.
Regular jockey Larry Cassidy retains the ride.
"After the last couple of runs Larry has said the horse is crying out to get on top of the ground and if he gets that tomorrow he'll be very hard to stop," Worthington said.
"The track is dead at the moment and there are no signs of rain so we should get the conditions we are looking for."
TAB Sportsbet has the last-start Group Three Craven Plate winner Lorne Dancer as its $2.10 favourite with the Bart Cummings-trained Book Of Kells locked on the second line of betting with Detroit Song at $7.50.
Detroit Song's stablemate Whitefriars has been spelled after he beat only two runners home in the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) last Saturday.
Whitefriars was nominated for the Victoria Derby (2500m) on November 1.
"From the time he jumped he was on the wrong leg and hanging the whole way, he just never handled the track and that was very disappointing," Worthington said.
"But the plan was always to spell him after the race and now we'll put him away until the autumn."
