Outstanding stayer No Wine No Song returns to work next month with trainer Kevin Moses looking to steer the seven-year-old towards consecutive Sydney Cup victories.
No Wine No Song was being aimed towards the Melbourne Cup but in August he was found to be gravely ill and rushed to the Randwick Equine Centre and operated on immediately to repair a displaced bowel.
The horse returned to Moses' stable recently after losing 18kg following the surgery.
"We've just been keeping a close eye on him but everything is in good order with him and he'll be back in work in the middle of next month," Moses said.
"We'll just take him along quietly and then with everything being fine he will go for the Sydney Cup again."
Moses, who won three Sydney premierships as a jockey, celebrated his first Group One victory as a trainer when No Wine No Song won the Sydney Cup (3200m) in May.
The major race win capped off a brilliant campaign for No Wine No Song who claimed the Group Two Chairman's Handicap (2600m) a week earlier and two runs prior to that had too much class for his rivals in the Group Three Randwick City Stakes (2000m).
After watching Tuesday's Melbourne Cup won by the Bart Cummings-trained Viewed, Moses believes his horse would have aimed up better than some of the foreign raiders.
"I think those foreigners read our press and believed everything they read about their horses being superior stayers to ours," Moses said.
"People don't realise how hard it is to win a Melbourne Cup without your horse having a run here first and those foreign trainers found that out again.
"For what it's worth, I think No Wine No Song would have gone well and would certainly have stayed the trip."
