Stablemates Astro Gains and Fitoussi carry Peter Moody's hopes of a second Derby win in less than a month.
Moody, who won the West Australian Derby with Markus Maximus on April 11, is looking to plot an upset in Saturday's South Australian Derby (2500m).
Victoria Derby winner Rebel Raider and Larry's Never Late are considered the two main chances in all markets including that of Centrebet which has them at $3.40 and $4.20 respectively.
Fitoussi is the preferred one of Moody's duo at $6 while Astro Gains is $17.
Moody's racing manager Jeff O'Connor said Fitoussi dropped out further than intended last start in the Chairman's TAB Stakes (2000m) but he was a horse still learning.
"He loses the plot at times," O'Connor said.
Ridden by Jason Benbow, Fitoussi made his run from last of the 15 runners and finished a creditable sixth, albeit five lengths behind the winner Rebel Raider, on April 18.
"He had to go around them all which made it hard for him but he ran on well," O'Connor said.
"We prefer him not to be getting back so far but his last two runs he has gone back because of wide draws.
"If he can draw a gate he might be able to hold a spot in front of a couple and travel better in the middle of them."
O'Connor said the SA Derby would be Fitoussi's last run before a well-deserved spell, but Astro Gains had the capacity to train on to the Queensland Derby in June.
"There is nothing wrong with Astro Gains' form," O'Connor said.
"He seems to have snuck into the Derby without anyone taking any notice of him but his four runs this campaign have all been good."
Second-up Astro Gains was beaten just over three lengths at Sandown where he was badly held up and finished 10th, but he has posted thirds at Caulfield at his last two runs.
He chased home Big Col and Markus Maximus over 2000 metres on March 28 and last start was beaten less than a length when third over 2390 metres to VRC St Leger runner-up Precedence.
Luke Nolen is likely to replace Linda Meech on Astro Gains in the Derby but a jockey is not yet confirmed for Fitoussi.
Centrebet's Neil Evans said Larry's Never Late was the best-backed runner in the SA Derby, firming on Tuesday from $4.40 after several thousand dollars were outlaid on him.
"There's a real betting war developing between Rebel Raider and Larry's Never Late," Evans said.
"Both have taken money, but the biggest strikes have come for Larry's Never Late.
"I think they'll end up gapping the rest by the time the final field arrives."
The Derby field will be declared on Wednesday morning.
