Plans to start the promising Iamzeus in next month's $1 million Caulfield Guineas are in danger after his narrow defeat at Flemington.

Trainer Danny O'Brien was counting on the colt winning the Lord Dudley Hcp (1430m) to significantly boost his prizemoney and said jockey James Winks erred by not getting Iamzeus out into the clear on the home turn.

"If he pops out coming to the corner he wins," he said.

"By staying in behind horses and with the rail out so far (15m) he was letting himself be dictated to."

His second place in the race won by Weekend Hussler last year and Efficient two years ago, followed his debut win on the Geelong ThoroughTrack and took his earnings to just $17,300 which might not be enough to make the final field.

However, Iamzeus is being kept safe in Caulfield Guineas betting at $8.50 with TAB Sportsbet.

"If he gets in he'll run, if he doesn't we'll go the Carbine Club Stakes, Sandown Guineas path then look to the (2009) Australian Guineas," O'Brien said

Winks redeemed himself when he won the Olympic Girl Hcp (1740m) on the O'Brien trained four-year-old mare Sparkling Satine ($8.50).

Dominating Caulfield Guineas betting as $2.80 favourite is the Mark Kavanagh-trained Whobegotyou, a stablemate of Sunday's Lord Dudley winner Dr Doute's who will not run in the Group One race but instead be aimed at the Carbine Club Stakes and the Sandown Guineas later in the spring.

"I'll just space his races and get him on the bigger tracks. I don't want to give him a taxing spring," Kavanagh said of the Redoute's Choice colt who has won two of his three starts.

Ridden by Michael Rodd, Dr Doute's ($10) had only a short-head to spare over Iamzeus with Dancefloor Prodigy 4-1/4 lengths away third.

Rodd, who won Friday night's Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on the impressive Whobegotyou, said the effort of Dr Doute's was better than it looked because the saddle slipped early in the race forcing him to let him stride forward from near the rear of the field.
