Melbourne stable foreman Reg Fleming will recommend to his boss Bart Cummings that a Brisbane campaign be considered for emerging three-year-old Royal Striker.
Fleming said the gelding had proven a handful to train in the past but was now well on the way to realising his potential after winning the Bingham Freight Systems Handicap (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Monday.
Ridden near the lead by Luke Nolen, Royal Striker proved too strong for last year's run away Geelong Classic winner The Tiger, scoring by a length, with Peace Treaty a fast-finishing third another 1-1/4 lengths away.
A New Zealand bred gelding by Van Nistelrooy from Deputy Governor mare Royal Show, Royal Striker has won two of 10 starts.
He has been a different horse since winkers were added to his gear three starts ago at Ballarat where he won his maiden over 1600 metres before finishing second to highly rated three-year-old Iamzeus at Flemington a month ago.
Fleming said Royal Striker trained on from that run and would continue to improve.
"He is learning all the time," Fleming said. "When he we got him over from New Zealand he was a bit of a head case and a bit fizzy but he's come good.
"I would like to take him up to Brisbane but whether Bart will let me or not is another thing."
Fleming said a suitable race could be the Queensland Guineas (1600m) in June.
"Hopefully he will go from here and even step up in distance," Fleming said.
Cummings has won 11 Melbourne races this season including the Melbourne Cup with Viewed and Group One Patinack Classic with Swick.
Only last Saturday Cummings won with VRC St Leger Stakes prospect Precedence at Caulfield while he landed a double at Randwick, including the Group One AJC Australian Derby with Roman Emperor.
Jockey Jim Cassidy's post Derby quip, "clickety-clack The Pumper and Bart are back", left Fleming somewhat bemused.
"I thought Bart had never left," Fleming said.
"He (Cassidy) mustn't have been here Melbourne Cup week."
