Lord Tavistock is likely to wear blinkers for what trainer Mick Price described as a spring grand final in Saturday's Caulfield Guineas.
Price will put the three-year-old colt to the test in blinkers in a track gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday morning before making a final decision on the gear change.
Price said Lord Tavistock was sluggish from the barriers when a fast finishing fourth to Fernandina in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and hopes blinkers will make the horse more focused.
"I want to have a look at him with the blinkers on in the morning because I was unhappy with his first 200 metres the other day," Price said.
"I thought he was a little bit doughy and, as he is still a colt, he may need to get a little bit switched on."
Lord Tavistock has raced only six times including three starts in New Zealand where he started his racing career with a win at Trentham.
His other win was two starts ago when he took out the Henry Bucks Best Dressed Plate (1400m) at Flemington.
It was his second start for Price after finishing second to Fernandina in the Listed Vain Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 16.
Lord Tavistock has always appealed to Price as a Caulfield Guineas horse, being by Montjeu from Quest For Fame mare Upstage.
However despite his stout pedigree, Price isn't tempted to aim him at the Victoria Derby.
"He is going well but he is not a big, robust horse," Price said. "He will probably just run in the Caulfield Guineas and then go out (for a spell)."
Final acceptances for the Guineas will be declared on Tuesday morning.
Lord Tavistock is on the third line of betting with TAB Sportsbet at $8 Whobegotyou is a dominant favourite at $2.80 on the strength of his impressive last-start win in the Group Two Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m).
The Lee Freedman-trained Time Thief is $7, the same quote as the Danny O'Brien-trained Iamzeus who is well down the order of entry and in danger of missing of start.
