Apprentice Daniel Ganderton found himself in the spotlight at Rosehill for all the right reasons when he steered Gigas to victory for former boss Gai Waterhouse.

Last season's champion junior rider in Sydney, Ganderton has had a troubled few months starting with a broken leg suffered in a fall in September.

During his time off, his indentures were transferred to Paul Messara and on his second day back from injury, Ganderton found himself on the wrong side of Queensland stewards.

He was given a two-month suspension for his handling of Deer Valley in a race at the Gold Coast on January 2 and was riding on a stay of proceedings on Saturday pending an appeal next week.

Gigas was sent out the $3.40 second favourite in the Agrum Collection Hcp (1500m) and jumped straight to the front out of the barriers.

She was kept going under strong riding from Ganderton to hold off the fast-finishing The Starlet ($8) by a neck.

"Daniel still rides out for me two mornings a week," Waterhouse said.

"I'm still keen to use him, especially with his one-and-a-half kilo claim.

"This is a lovely filly and the further she goes the better."

Ganderton was happy to be back on the right side of the ledger.

"Obviously I've only been back a short period and the only way to get back is by riding winners," Ganderton said.
