Boom Sydney apprentice Daniel Ganderton returned to scale in severe distress after riding the race of his life to win the Queensland Cup on Cape Breton at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Having his first ride beyond 2600m, Ganderton produced a masterly display to win the $150,000 Listed 3200m feature.

But the 21-year-old dismounted in obvious distress and was forced to abandon the presentation and went straight to the doctor's room to be treated for dizziness and dehydration.

Ganderton apologised to reporters shortly after he weighed in and requested the doctor's assistance.

He was stood down from his engagement aboard Feline Hunter in the last race and the drama took some of the shine off what was otherwise a landmark day in the apprentice's career.

Winning Goulburn trainer Danny Williams praised Ganderton for a "sensational ride" and said winning the Queensland Cup was one of his biggest thrills on a racecourse.

"It may only be a Listed race but to win a Queensland Cup is one my greatest thrills," Williams said.

"Daniel rode him perfectly. I told him to be patient and he produced a masterly display.

"We set this horse for the Queensland Cup at the start of this preparation and to win it is special. He's had no luck this horse.

"He has bad feet and the drought and the hard tracks at home haven't helped."

Ganderton allowed Cape Breton ($7) to relax over the gruelling journey and the horse travelled sweetly worse than midfield on the fence before producing a big finish to post a length win.

New Zealand galloper Petushki ($12) loomed up halfway up the straight to finish a bold second with Victorian galloper Kerdem ($6.50) a further 2-1/4 lengths astern in third.

Ganderton easily secured the riding honours after earlier winning the Ascot Handicap on Battlefield and the two-year-old event on that horse's stablemate Savoia.

Queensland Cup favourite Phaze Action ($3.20) failed to back up after his game second to Reggie in last week's Caloundra Cup and only plugged to the line to finish sixth.
