Apprentice Daniel Ganderton has an excellent chance to post his first major win in Sydney - but not for his boss Gai Waterhouse.

Bart Cummings has engaged Ganderton for leading Summer Cup candidate Zazabeau at Randwick on Friday while Waterhouse is without a runner in the Group Three feature.

Cummings has already enjoyed the biggest success possible with a Waterhouse rider when Blake Shinn steered Viewed to an historic and dramatic Melbourne Cup victory.

"Daniel Ganderton will ride Zazabeau, he rode him well last time so we will stick with him," Cummings said.

Ganderton is currently leading the apprentices' premiership with 17 wins, five more than last season's winner Peter Wells.

He rode Zazabeau to second in the Christmas Cup (2400m), the same distance as the Summer Cup, when the four-year-old jumped from the outside gate in the 13-horse field.

"If he had drawn a barrier, he just about wins," Cummings said.

The Listed race was won by Ready to Lift who is the early favourite at $3.20 for the Summer Cup ahead of Rainbow Styling at $3.60.

Zazabeau was next in first markets at $7.50.

Rainbow Styling finished a close third in the Christmas Cup and races in the pink and grey colours sported by champion Might And Power.

Zazabeau also races in famous silks, the black and white checks of Dato Tan Chin Nam worn by Viewed and also by champion Saintly.

A son of Zabeel out of The Perfume Garden, Zazabeau was scratched minutes before the AJC Australian Derby in May with a slight injury.

Instead of joining Moatize on the Melbourne Cup trail, Zazabeau raced in lower grade events during the spring with 2009 in mind.

He is a full brother to Zazabelle who finished third in the 1999 Melbourne Cup won by her stablemate, the Cummings-trained Rogan Josh.

A Summer Cup victory would fulfil the first ballot clause for the 2009 Melbourne Cup.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Ready To Lift was originally being aimed the Perth Cup on New Year's Day but a lack of suitable flights prompted the change in plans.

She was the early favourite for the Group Two race in the west but the David Hayes-trained The Fuzz was elevated to the head of the market on her withdrawal.

Ryan also has Tommifrancs in the Summer Cup and the seven-year-old goes into the race off a victory in a 2000 metre welter at Rosehill on December 6.
