Sydney's leading apprentice Daniel Ganderton produced a brilliant ride on Strat's Flyer to win the Listed Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford but once again found himself in trouble with stewards.

Stipes fined Ganderton fined $200 for weighing in one kilogram overweight after Wednesday's 1200 metre feature.

Racing NSW senior steward Marc Van Gestel warned Ganderton the penalty would have been more severe had the excess weight cost him the race.

The talented youngster who is the runaway leader of the Sydney apprentices' premiership has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently.

Last week he was handed a suspended one month ban after being found guilty of improper behaviour for laughing at a question he was asked in a stewards inquiry.

Strat's Flyer's trainer Allan Denham was full of praise for Ganderton who ironically took over from the Rosehill horseman's original choice of Nash Rawiller who would not have been able to make the 54.5kg.

"I told the kid to ride him back, get him travelling and ride him for luck," Denham said.

"He did a great job, it was a terrific ride."

Strat's Flyer, who started at $21, defeated favourite Kroner by 1-1/2 lengths in the 1200 metre feature.

The win gave Ganderton his second stakes victory after he won the June Stakes on Kroner earlier this month.

"I've tried to put my head down and will continue to work hard and hopefully I can keep going forward," Ganderton said.

"It's important for me to prove that I can win these stakes races on a level playing field with the top riders and I see this as an important step for me."

Ganderton settled Strat's Flyer near last before making an inside run and rocketing to the line.

"He (Denham) thought they might be a bit nippy for him and that he would do his best work late," Ganderton said.

"I got on the back of Kroner and he gave us a good cart into the race. I got held up for a stride and went back to the inside and thankfully the gaps opened and everything panned out for us."

Leading jockey Hugh Bowman was fined $300 for saluting to retiring racecaller Ian Craig as he crossed the line first aboard Verrekeen in the final event of the day.

"It's an honour to ride the last winner Ian will call, he will be sorely missed and was the voice of racing," Bowman said after the penalty was handed down.
