Leading Epsom Handicap contender Rothesay has been ruled out of Saturday's feature at Randwick while Danleigh has been ruled back in.

Trainer Gerald Ryan has been forced to treat Rothesay over the weekend for a virus but says he still expects the four-year-old to have a Melbourne spring campaign.

Fellow Rosehill trainer Chris Waller was initially disappointed with Danleigh's fourth in Saturday's George Main Stakes but had a change of heart overnight and said he wanted to give the triple Group One winning sprinter another try at 1600 metres.

"As of today, we are planning to run," Waller said on Sunday.

"I think we've been riding him riding him too close.

"In the George Main he was three wide without cover. He needs to get back and charge home, that's his best pattern.

"He's been exposed the way he has been racing and I still think he can get the trip.

"His run in the Doncaster for fifth showed that."

Danleigh has 59 kilograms in the Epsom and his presence means weights will not have to be raised to ensure a 57kg minimum .

Rothesay is expected to make a full recovery from the virus with Ryan just one of many trainers affected in the past few weeks.

Ryan said more than 20 of his horses had had some complaint while Warwick Farm trainer John Thompson has lost at least 10 of his spring carnival hopes.

"He had an elevated temperature on Friday and he's been treated over the weekend," Ryan said.

"If he recovers well, the tentative plan is to run him over 1400 metres at Rosehill on the 23rd of October and then go to the Emirates Mile at Flemington two weeks later and that race has always been the aim."

Rothesay's only race outing since his Queensland Guineas win in June produced a second to More Joyous in the Theo Marks Stakes on September 11.

Neeson was the $6 favourite for the Epsom with TAB Sportsbet on Sunday ahead of Drumbeats at $7.

Trusting, runner-up to More Joyous in the George Main, is at $9 alongside New Zealander Firebolt with Danleigh next at $11.

Danleigh's Group One wins are the 2009 All-Aged Stakes (1400m) and the Manikato Stakes (1200m) and this year's George Ryder (1500m).

Prior to his George Main fourth, he was also fourth in the Makybe Diva at Flemington on September 4 won by Shocking.

He suffered a check during the running of the Doncaster in April which was won by his stablemate Rangirangdoo.
