Gai Waterhouse has entered 15 horses in her quest to win a fifth Epsom Handicap but 2008 winner Theseo is not among them.

First nominations for the major spring races at Randwick on October 3 were released on Monday with 101 entries for the Epsom (1600m) including the Waterhouse-trained trio of Manhattan Rain, Tuesday Joy and last year's runner-up Bank Robber.

Waterhouse prepared Desert War to win back-to-back Epsoms in 2004-05 but Theseo will not get the chance to emulate him after having an early setback in his preparation.

David Hayes has entered five horses headed by the promising Eagle Falls and Group One Galaxy winner Nicconi while Darley trainer Peter Snowden's quintet includes Queensland Oaks winner Purple and comeback galloper Drumbeats.

Multiple Group One winners Mentality and Vision And Power, outstanding mare Typhoon Tracy and Stradbroke Handicap victor Black Piranha are also in the Epsom mix.

AJC Australian Derby winner Roman Emperor spearheads the 91 nominations for the Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) along with Sydney Cup victor Ista Kareem and Randwick and Rosehill Guineas hero Metal Bender.

Waterhouse has also entered Tuesday Joy for the Group One staying feature while Lee Freedman has promising import Speed Gifted nominated.

The Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) has attracted 77 three-year-olds, down from 91 last year, with the entries headed by Group One winners Onemorenomore and Manhattan Rain along with Golden Slipper placegetter Headway.
