Multiple Group One winner Theseo has taken the next step towards an autumn comeback with an encouraging gallop at Randwick on Saturday.

The six-year-old middle distance champion returned to Gai Waterhouse's Tulloch Lodge during the week and the man who knows him better than most, jockey Nash Rawiller was elated with him following the hitout.

"He's still a bit soft but he's come back really well," Rawiller said.

"It was nothing too taxing, just a steady gallop but he's starting to feel like his old self again."

Theseo missed the spring because of a hoof injury suffered in the Doncaster Mile in April where he beat just one runner home.

Waterhouse said she was taking a steady approach with Theseo and was pleasantly surprised by how well he travelled in the gallop.

"It's been three months since Nash has been on him and he couldn't believe how fluid his action was and I couldn't either, he went very well," Waterhouse said.

"His injuries have come right and now we just have to be patient with him. I haven't set a program for him yet because he's not fit.

"But he'll start moving along now so we can get him fit for the autumn carnival."

Theseo was edged out by Mentality in the 2008 George Main Stakes then backed up a week later to land his first Group One in the Epsom Handicap (1600m).

A month later he went to Melbourne and scored his second major when he held out Barbaricus in a thrilling finish to the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).

In February this year Theseo led all the way to win the Group Two St George Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield by nearly four lengths.

He then was beaten a nose by Niconero in the Group One Australian Cup.

He subsequently returned to Sydney to win his third top flight race, the Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill before running second to heavy track specialist Fiumicino in the BMW.
