TODAY'S meeting at Caulfield may be just another midsummer fixture but for apprentice Jason Maskiell it's another vital stepping stone to re-establishing himself in Victoria's jockey ranks, reports The Age.

It says: Just two months ago it seemed the former Tasmanian star apprentice had destroyed his chances at a successful career in Melbourne after a very public sacking by Caulfield trainer Mick Price. Price cited drinking issues and cut the apprentice.

Weeks later fellow trainer Robert Smerdon extended a lifeline to the 20-year-old but that partnership didn't last and Maskiell was again on the outer of the state's elite riding ranks. But a reconciliation with Smerdon was successful and Maskiell committed to remaining focused on his riding. He rejoined Smerdon and, in a bid to re-establish his name, enlisted the services of Melbourne jockey agent Brendan Cormick, who also manages Glen Boss.

''They might have been good times then but I've learnt a lesson that knuckling down and giving it 100 per cent is the only way to success,'' Maskiell said yesterday.
