A Group One day at Randwick would not be complete without Gai Waterhouse who had to wait until the last of the four features to claim the biggest prize with the Epsom Handicap quinella courtesy of Theseo and Bank Robber.

Rain overnight and during the day put a different complexion on the meeting with the Anthony Cummings-trained Raheeb, the $4.80 Epsom favourite, failing to handle the soft footing as had his stablemate Red Lord who floundered in the Metropolitan a race before.

Bank Robber went into the race at $7.50 compared to his stablemate's $10 and shared the lead with Kiloton who carted the field into the straight with Theseo just behind the pair.

Bank Robber strode to the front and although he fought hard he didn't have an answer to Theseo who made Zac Purton's hit-and-run trip from Hong Kong more than worthwhile.

"The writing was on the wall last week when Theseo ran second in the George Main," Waterhouse said.

"The Epsom was his main goal. I set him for the race six months ago and he proved how good he is.

"Bank Robber ran really well but he is not as seasoned as Theseo and they finished they way I expected."

It was the fifth Epsom trophy for Waterhouse and the first for Purton who has just begun his second season in Hong Kong.

"There is no doubt that riding in Hong Kong has made me a better jockey," Purton said.

"I jumped at the chance to ride in the Epsom when it was offered."

Waterhouse was forced to look outside her stable jockeys with Bank Robber carrying 52kg and Theseo 51.5kg.

Blake Shinn rode topweight Niconero while the suspended Nash Rawiller, who rides at around 54kg, cheered from the public grandstand.

Peter Robl was aboard Bank Robber and said he thought he had it won.

"I thought I was going well enough but the other won was just too good at the end," Robl said.

"He went as good as he could. Gai told me they were both 100 per cent and she was right."

Theseo and Bank Robber both race in the purple and white colours of syndicator Denise Martin's Star Thoroughbreds which also races Golden Slipper winner Sebring.

Gallant Tess ran another great race for third, beaten just two lengths, to go with her placing in last week's George Main Stakes at weight-for-age.

"She tries hard, she always does and never lets anyone down," trainer David Payne said.

Raheeb finished 13th of the 18 runners almost 11 lengths from the winner after floundering in the straight while George Main Stakes winner Mentality also found it tough in the wet.

All Silent and Judged both made ground from back in the pack to finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Waterhouse won her first Epsom in 1997 with Iron Horse, her second in 2002 with Excellerator and claimed back-to-back victories in 2004-05 with Desert War.
