A feature race quinella to stablemates Danleigh and Rangirangdoo in the Apollo Stakes was not unexpected but not in the order punters predicted.

Rangirangdoo started the $2.40 favourite in Saturday's Group Two Apollo (1400m) and looked to have the race in his keeping until Danleigh ($8) pounced in the final strides to win by a half-neck.

Trainer Chris Waller said perhaps he had erred in telling Corey Brown to use Rangirangdoo's speed which meant he got to the front a bit early.

But Waller also pointed out that Danleigh is a dual Group One winner and should never be underestimated.

"Danleigh is a Group One weight-for-age performer and he's proved that," Waller said.

"Rangirangdoo was left in front a long way out.

"I told Corey not to be afraid to use his speed and that's probably why he got there when he did - my mistake."

Villiers Stakes winner Palacio De Cristal ($21) was an eye-catching length third after being last early while Hadaaf ($151) was fourth.

Hugh Bowman rode the winner who jumped from the outside gate and was taken back to worse than midfield.

Danleigh finished last of five runners in the Expressway Stakes a fortnight ago won by Rangirangdoo but Waller said that was due to the heavy track.

"Danleigh is unbeaten on slow tracks and is just as effective on dead or good but he just cannot handle the heavy," Waller said.

Danleigh and Rangirangdoo will both head to the Group One Chipping Norton Stakes in two weeks with Waller keen to stretch the former to 1600 metres.

His Group One wins have been over 1400 metres in the All-Aged Stakes and 1200 in the Manikato Stakes.

Rangirangdoo has yet to win at the highest level but was the closest of seconds to Rock Kingdom in the Epsom Handicap over the Randwick mile.

Waller hopes to get both Rangirangdoo and Danleigh to the Doncaster Mile while trainer Grahame Begg is also aiming Palacio De Cristal at the race but hoping to pick up some major wins on the way.

"She ran a great race and will head to the Chipping Norton," Begg said.

"Then all the races like the Coolmore Classic and the Doncaster are there for her."

Apart from Danleigh there were six other Group One winners in the race with Roman Emperor fifth, Vision And Power sixth, Theseo eighth, Rock Kingdom ninth, Purple 11th and No Wine No Song last of the 13 runners.

Theseo was up challenging for the lead but weakened in the run home at what was his first start since the Doncaster in April 2008.

Star South Australian stayer Alcopop finished 10th, 4-1/2 lengths from the winner and not disgraced at his first outing since finishing unplaced as favourite in the Melbourne Cup.

"The stayers were all back in the field but he seemed to handle the track okay," trainer Jake Stephens said.
