Leon Corstens will appeal a six-month suspension imposed on him on Wednesday over Starspangledbanner returning a pre-race positive swab to a prohibited substance before winning first-up at Caulfield last August.

Starspangledbanner tested positive to Altrenogest, a synthetic hormone which is usually given to mares to control their reproductive cycle.

The trainer pleaded not guilty and told the Racing Appeals And Disciplinary Board he had not given the star three-year-old colt Regumate which contains Altrenogest.

Corstens said he had given Regumate to three mares in his stable but they were not in the vicinity of Starspangledbanner's box.

Altrenogest is not a prohibited substance for mares.

The Group One Caulfield Guineas winner, who last Friday was sold to Coolmore Stud for $10 million, was disqualified from his win in the Victorian Owners & Breeders Award Hcp (1000m) on August 1 last year.

As it stands, Corstens' suspension will start at midnight on Sunday, February 28 and expire at midnight on Tuesday, August 31.
