Three-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Glen Boss played a starring role as Risky Business ended Better Than Ever's unbeaten run with an upset Singapore Gold Cup win.

Saving as much Kranji turf as possible, Boss brought the Steven Burridge-trained Risky Business from well back along the inside before surging clear for a 2-1/4 length win.

The victory was never in doubt from the 100-metre mark and the flamboyant jockey had ample time to stand high in the irons and salute the crowd - a trademark Boss celebration which earned him a $S1000 fine.

"To win the Gold Cup is just fantastic, especially for Steven and the team who have been having a terrific run throughout this season," Boss said.

Boss, who won three consecutive Melbourne Cups aboard the champion mare Makybe Diva in 2003, 2004 and 2005, described the Gold Cup win as a career highlight.

"It is exciting to win a feature race when you travel to ride in big races," he said.

Risky Business is an Australian-bred son of Danehill Dancer who fetched $90,000 at the 2006 Magic Millions yearling sale.

Better Than Ever went to the barrier as a warm favourite to extend his unbeaten run to 13 despite concerns about his ability to perform at his best on a rain-affected track.

Settling well back in the field - but ahead of the eventual winner - Better Than Ever never raised the hopes of his fans in finishing 12th.

"It was a combination of the weight and the weather today that brought him undone," Laxon said.

"We were unsure how he would handle it, but after that, now we know.

"I did have my concerns before the race, but he seems all right and that is the important thing."

On a track described as yielding, Risky Business ran the 2200m in 2min 15.61secs, only 0.8 second outside last year's winner El Dorado's record.
