Apprentice Nathan Berry learned quickly after an earlier dressing down from Gai Waterhouse to claim his first winner for the champion trainer on Flying Success.

Waterhouse had words with Berry after he was caught three-wide in the opening race at Rosehill on Cyclone Stacey who went on to finish third.

But Berry, who was riding for Waterhouse for the first time at the meeting, bounced straight back at his next attempt to lead all the way on Flying Success ($1.90 fav) in the Blackwoods For Galmet Handicap (1200m).

"She (Waterhouse) gave me a rev-up in the first, she said 'that's not how you ride my horses'," Berry said.

"She said, 'you ride my horses to lead because they are trained to lead and trained to stick on so that's how you ride them'.

"Once she got that into my head I was right for the second ride."

Flying Success bounced out of the gates brilliantly and Berry held the lead on the inside.

Rival runners started to make a move around the mare turning for home but Berry was confident he still had their measure.

Shortly after straightening Flying Success started to surge clear and posted a 1-3/4 length winning margin over Demanding Miss with the same margin to Rain Melody in third.

"I was happy to let them come around because I knew what I still had underneath me and I knew she would leave them for dead," Berry said.

Flying Success is a half-sister to classy three-year-old Squamosa and took her own record to three wins from just eight starts.

Waterhouse believes the daughter of Flying Spur is destined for better wins and will consider running her again next Saturday at Rosehill.

The fillies and mares race on Magic Millions day at the Gold Coast in January is also on the cards.

"How easy was that?" Waterhouse said.

"It just shows you, he (Berry) took control of the race once she jumped brilliantly and she won as she liked."
