Sydney racing enters a new phase on Wednesday when Randwick's Kensington track is the venue for the newly-formed Australian Turf Club's first meeting.

The new club, a merger between the Australian Jockey Club and the Sydney Turf Club, began operating on Monday and the New Beginnings Handicap (1000m) will be the first race conducted by the new entity.

For another reason, the race will be a significant moment for apprentice Tommy Berry who will partner unraced two-year-old Colloquial.

Berry accepted an offer last week from Gai Waterhouse to join her Tulloch Lodge team as the stable's number two rider, and Colloquial will be his first ride for the trainer since taking up the position.

"I'm really looking forward to it and it's a good ride, too," Berry said.

"She has had two trials for two wins leading into the race and hopefully we can break through with the first one."

Colloquial is one of two Waterhouse-trained juveniles in the eight-horse field and will be joined by Rocky Two who will have the services of Waterhouse's number one stable rider Nash Rawiller.

Colloquial, a daughter of 2006 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Nadeem, went around at the official two-year-old trials in September before returning with two more trials last month in preparation for her debut.

The filly won a 735m heat by a length with Stacey Rawiller in the saddle on January 17, then Nash Rawiller hopped aboard when she won by 1-1/2 lengths in a 740m hitout on January 27.

Berry started riding trackwork for Waterhouse last Thursday and says he's working hard at getting to know all the Tulloch Lodge horses.

Last season's champion apprentice also has four rides for the stable at Randwick on Saturday including Brightexpectations, Montana Flyer and Wild And Proud in stakes races.

He said it would be great to get the ball rolling on Wednesday.

"Gai has given me a good opportunity this week, I've got a heap of rides for her with four rides in Group and Listed races on Saturday," Berry said.

"I'm really looking forward to it and I've just got to try and repay her now which hopefully won't be a problem."

Sydney's three leading trainers are all a chance of preparing the winner of the first race conducted by the new club, with premiership pacesetter Chris Waller entering first starters Meshmaker and Homedge while reigning title holder Peter Snowden has Spain entered.

Spain is a colt by Lonhro out of Peach, making him a full-brother to the Group One winner Denman.

Denman was prepared by Snowden to win nine of his 12 starts including the 2009 Group One Golden Rose.
