Tommy Berry has moved into the top five in the Sydney jockeys' premiership and is looking to cement his position at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Berry's Lord Mayor's Cup win on Kinnersley on Saturday took him ahead of Jim Cassidy in the Sydney standings to be outright fifth and he hopes to keep the momentum going with two-year-old Betrayal at the midweek meeting.

Berry will sport the same Star Thoroughbreds colours on Betrayal as he wore aboard Kinnersley on Saturday, and is looking forward to partnering the possible Brisbane winter carnival contender.

Betrayal is on the third line of betting for next month's Group One T J Smith (1600m) in Brisbane but stable representative Bruce Slade said Waterhouse would just take it one step at a time with the young galloper.

Betrayal finished second to the promising Sessions on debut at Randwick on April 25.

"He's a highly-strung horse that gets quite revved-up which you would have seen at Randwick but Gai has put a bit more work under his belt and his work is outstanding," Berry said.

"He couldn't be working any better and the trip to the races would have done him the world of good to give him a bit more experience.

"Hopefully we see a more relaxed horse tomorrow and he should be in the finish."

The 21-year-old jockey said he was determined to maintain his top five premiership position.

His six Canterbury rides also include the resuming Battant and St Beune for Waterhouse.

"It's my first full year as a fully-fledged jockey and Dad (trainer Kevin Berry) said if I can finish in the top 10 I should be rapt, so if I can finish top five I would be over the moon," Berry said.

"A lot of it has got to do with the support from Gai and from a lot of owners.

"It (finishing top five) would be great because there is a great bunch of jockeys here and there's some good ones I'm in front of.

"It shows I'm capable of being here riding in Sydney."
