Talented jockey Nathan Berry knows he needs to reduce his time spent on the sidelines if he is to take his career to the next level.

Berry returns from a seven-meeting suspension at Rosehill on Saturday and is keen to make the most of his six rides.

The 21-year-old said his latest two-week ban, his sixth careless riding suspension in the past 12 months, had proven costly as it ruled him out of the two-day Scone Cup carnival.

"I was meant to be on Upon This Rock in the Dark Jewel for Gai (Waterhouse) at Scone and that hit me pretty hard," Berry said.

"To win a Listed race for Gai and just get a bit of a kick along with her while all the boys are in Brisbane would have been a big help."

One of Berry's Rosehill rides is on the Waterhouse-trained Samui Lad in the Blackwoods Handicap (1400m).

Berry's twin brother Tommy is Waterhouse's number two stable rider and has enjoyed a successful season to sit in the top five on the Sydney premiership table.

Any momentum Nathan Berry has started to build during the season, however, has been halted due to suspensions.

"I think that just shows why Tom is where he is at the moment and why I am where I am," Berry said.

"He hasn't got suspended for over 14 months and I've been suspended six times.

"Every time I seem to get a roll on or seem to get three winners in a week and look like having a good week the following week, I get put out.

"I think I've missed out on six winners this suspension which really hurt me this time."

Samui Lad is the $4.80 favourite with TAB Sportsbet.

"He's in great form, he rarely runs a bad race and Gai's team is firing so I'm very happy to be on him," he said.

Queensland Oaks hopeful Eliza Blues and import Moriarty are his two rides for Waller.

Berry believes barrier three can prove an advantage for Eliza Blues while he is also looking forward to riding Moriarty.

"I think he's knocking on the door for a win," he said.

During his time off, Berry took the opportunity to take a week's holiday.

"Now I'm back ready to fire. And stay on the track more than off the track," he said.
