Tommy Berry is in the box seat to claim his first Sydney apprentices' title, and with a number of top riders in Queensland on Saturday he'll be out to add to his metropolitan tally.

Berry is currently seven wins clear of Brenton Avdulla in the Sydney apprentices' standings and has seven rides at Rosehill headed by Vision And Power in the $100,000 Lord Mayor's Cup (2000m) and smart three-year-old Rothesay in the De Bortoli Wines Handicap (1400m).

It will be Berry's first ride on the Joe Pride-trained dual Group One winner Vision And Power.

"Ever since myself and my brother (Nathan) started, the whole aim was to win a Sydney apprentices' title," Berry said.

"I never really thought it would happen but I'm seven in front at the moment and things are going well.

"Guys like Tye (Angland) and Tim Clark have won it in the past and I think it helps for when you come out of your time."

Berry, who has ridden 36 metropolitan winners so far this season, has had success riding for Pride and owner Nick Moraitis in the past, winning races on Vision And Power's stablemates Bejewelled and Sophistication.

He is looking for an improved showing from last year's Doncaster winner despite him having to lump the topweight of 61kg.

"Hopefully he can turn his form around dropping down in class. He's got a lot of weight but he's a big, tough horse so it shouldn't worry him," Berry said.

Rothesay is the horse Berry is really keen to ride after his third to Latin News first-up in the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m).

"He's only going to have 51.5 kilos on his back and it was a good run from him first-up in the Gosford Guineas," he said.

Vision And Power will head to Brisbane after Saturday and a Queensland winter campaign could also be on the cards for his Lord Mayor's Cup rival Common Objective, depending on how well he performs at Rosehill.

Common Objective is backing up after finishing fifth to Snow Alert in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) last weekend.

"We were happy with his run at Hawkesbury last week, he was probably just a fraction dour the last little bit," Waterhouse's racing manager Mark Webbey said.

"We're quite comfortable with the progress he's made out of the race and there is the option to head to Brisbane with him after this race or keep him in Sydney for a winter Cups preparation.

"Saturday will tell us more."
