The John Moore-trained Frederick Engels is named after the father of Marxism and he can take his turn at spreading some wealth in the Manawatu Racing Club Challenge Trophy (1,000m) at Happy Valley today.

Hopefully Frederick Engels (Zac Purton) will find himself in the right barrier stall before the start and the winner's stall after it as the three-year-old starts to make inroads into what he cost on the back of some smart juvenile form in England last year.

A three-time winner there, Frederick Engels gave no indication that he was ever on song in five starts after his arrival last season, but a nice trial in September suggested he had benefited from a gelding operation during the off season and was beginning to acclimatise.

Of course, he and today's rival Simple were at the centre of the "wrong gates" brouhaha at Sha Tin when they resumed for the new term, jumping adjacent to one another but from transposed barriers.

It made no difference, given their tactical instructions, and the pair finished pretty much level in the Class Two behind El Zonda, but there are reasons to believe Frederick Engels will be the one to make the most progress as both drop back to Class Three.

One factor is that Simple had been given a good preparation for his first-up start with two trials, while Frederick Engels had only one, and the Moore-trained gelding raced in the three-wide path, while Simple was against the rail. Those roles may be reversed at Happy Valley, where it is a more important consideration in any case. And Frederick Engels might also have more to him than we have seen, now that he has started to acclimatise, while Simple has already laid his cards on the table in nine starts.
