THERE are no prizes and very little profit in selecting hot favourite Sepoy to win tomorrow's $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes, but despite the awful record of odds-on favourites in the race (five starters for one winner - Rancher in 1982), he is without doubt the horse to beat. This realisation, however, does little to help increase our bank balances so we are forced to look elsewhere to make a decent profit on the race, reports The Age.

Andrew Eddy's report adds: To start, Sepoy has come through the right races (the Preview and Prelude) in the style of a horse that is simply better than his rivals. If he is to be beaten tomorrow, it is likely to be because he has had an off day, but he is in the care of some outstanding horseman in Peter Snowden and his son Paul, and I've little doubt his whole career has been shaped for him to turn up on this day in his best possible condition.

From barrier five, it looks highly likely he will get the run of the race and as long as Kerrin McEvoy does not pull the trigger too early, he should have the class to win.

Away from the obvious, rarely does a Blue Diamond go by without a filly making some impact and the one that appeals the most is last week's Talindert Stakes winner ANEVAY (9). A genuine speed filly, her chances were given a boost when she drew barrier three as she can be expected to jump well and lead them up.

The history of the Blue Diamond suggests that often the winner comes from well back in the field and this pattern is now entrenched for many trainers and jockeys, so many of the better chances that have drawn awkwardly will be snagged back in the field to find a position. If so, this should help Anevay as she attempts to control things up in front.
