Tony McEvoy is expecting significant improvement from Concealer when she lines up in Saturday’s $1.5 million Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

The daughter of Nicconi is currently rated the $7.50 third favourite for Victoria’s richest two-year-old race with CrownBet following a fast-finishing second placing in the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m).

McEvoy said because he wasn’t relying on the filly winning first up to gain a start in the Blue Diamond, she has taken plenty of improvement from the run.

“She’s thrived, she hasn’t left an oat and she looks beautiful. That run has tightened her up and I wouldn’t change anything,” McEvoy said.

“Sadly she just looked the other way when the gates opened but I’ve got no doubt that she would have won had she jumped.

“She has had a faultless preparation and I’m really excited about her going in to the Blue Diamond.”

McEvoy said the current $2.90 favourite Extreme Choice was the horse to beat but that the Mick Pricestar faced a potentially tough task trying to race on the speed in what could be a high-pressure race.

“If Extreme Choice runs 1200 then he’s clearly the one to beat. We’re all querying him at 1200 but that’s a guess,” he said.

Flying Artie had a real Blue Diamond style about him as does my filly and Samara Dancer for that matter and swoopers win more Blue Diamonds than on-pacers.

“I think it’s pretty typical people talking up their colts because they want them to be a stallion if they win the Blue Diamond, but I don’t think there’s much between them.”

McEvoy will also be represented by $51 chance Hey Doc in the Blue Diamond, who is set to be partnered by New Zealand jockey Opie Bosson. (
