Caulfield trainer Clinton McDonald says Envious is the fresh horse on the scene going into Saturday's $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes on his home track and expects the colt to acquit himself well.
Envious, a $180,000 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale graduate, has raced just once, finishing fourth to Sepoy in the Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) for colts and geldings at Caulfield on January 26.
Redoute's Choice (1999) is the only Blue Diamond winner to have been victorious in the race at just his second start.
Racing Victoria stewards reported that Hussonet colt Envious got his head up near the 800m when being steadied and raced ungenerously for a short distance and was held up for clear running rounding the home turn before being beaten just under 4-1/2 lengths on debut.
McDonald has opted to apply pacifiers to the colt's gear on Saturday.
"He's a nice colt. He's shown us a great deal and on what he's shown us at home and at his first start we feel he's up to the mark," McDonald said of his first Blue Diamond runner.
"He's a really live chance. He's fresh, not a tired horse. He's new blood on the scene.
"He's got good ability and he's done nothing wrong going into the race.
"He looks well and he's matured and really come on."
McDonald's family has a proud Blue Diamond history with his father Ross winning the race with Courtza (1989), the last of just four two-year-olds to complete the Blue Diamond-Golden Slipper double.
McDonald's grandfather Bon Hoysted won the 1978 Blue Diamond with the great Manikato who also went on to win the Golden Slipper.
Envious, who drew barrier eight in the 14-horse field, will be ridden by Glen Boss who is yet to be placed in six rides in the Group One feature.
Meanwhile, Neil Evans of Centrebet has reported a constant stream of money for the undefeated Sepoy, the $1.75 favourite.
"With nearly $10,000 in the final field book in less than 24 hours, Sepoy commands 87 per cent of all monies and nearly $50,000 was bet in all-in futures with Sepoy holding 77 per cent of that book," he said.
He said there was no real backing for Hallowell Belle ($8) or late entry Atomic ($10), the only other horses in the field under $21 with Centrebet.
"This underlines not just Sepoy's strangulation of the market but depth-wise, this is one of the poorest Blue Diamond fields in a long time," Evans said.
Sepoy is at $1.60 with TAB Sportsbet ahead of Hallowell Belle at $10, Atomic at $11, Running Tall and Holdontoyahorses both at $19, Talindert Stakes winner Anevay at $21 with Metonymy and Envious next best at $26.
