The combination of wet weather and a niggling back injury has forced trainer Anthony Cummings to take Zavite out of Saturday's Group One Sydney Cup at Randwick.

The Adelaide Cup winner failed to beat a runner home in Saturday's Listed JRA Plate (2000m) on a dead track at Randwick after which he was found to be sore across the back.

Cummings' son and stable representative James confirmed that Zavite would not line-up in the 3200-metre feature.

"He won't run, we were disappointed with his performance on Saturday and he's out," James Cummings said.

"It's not a decision made just because of the back problem, it's also the rain and the fact we believe after Saturday's performance that he's simply had enough."

Prior to his win in the Group Two Adelaide Cup last month, Zavite claimed the Group Three Launceston Cup (2400m) in February.

Zavite has been up since finishing eighth in the Group Two JJ Liston Stakes (1400m) in August last year.

He was given an eight week let-up after his fourth in the Group Three Queen Elizabeth (2500m) at Flemington in November.

The six-year-old won the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) at his third run after the let-up before running second in the Group Three Hobart Cup (2200m).

Randwick track manager Dave Hodgson rated the surface a slow seven on Tuesday but expects it to improve by race day.

"They've forecast more showers for Wednesday but Thursday right through (to Saturday) should be fine and with some good drying weather I'm hoping to see it dead like it was for Doncaster day," Hodgson said.

The Danny O'Brien-trained Master O'Reilly has the Cup topweight of 57.5 kilograms and is also the TAB Sportsbet favourite at $6.50.

Master O'Reilly was a last-start fourth to Fiumicino in the Group One BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on April 4.

Fiumicino is the second elect for the at $7 and will be ridden by the in-form Jim Cassidy for his long-time friend Nick Moraitis.

Darren Beadman was aboard the Hawkes partnership-trained Fiumicino when he won the BMW but was suspended for his Golden Slipper ride on the day.

New Zealander Mr Tipsy, who ran fifth in the BMW, is on the third line of betting with Group One winner Newport at $8.
