Well travelled gelding Zavite will return to Sydney for two of the autumn's feature staying contests after cruising home in Monday's $400,000 Group Two Adelaide Cup at Morphettville.
It was his first attempt at 3200 metres and after a perfect on-speed ride from Nash Rawiller, Zavite swept to the front rounding the turn and easily held out his rivals for a strong victory.
Trainer Anthony Cummings was thrilled with the win in Adelaide's toughest and richest race but said connections would now be chasing the riches in Sydney.
"He better be ready for some more racing yet," Cummings said.
"He's heading back for the Sydney Cup now."
"We'll look at running him in the BMW between now and the Sydney Cup."
After winning his first race for more than a year in the Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Randwick, Zavite ran second in the Group Three Hobart Cup (2200m) on February 9.
He then travelled back to Tasmania from Cummings' Caulfield base on February 25 to claim the Group Three Launceston Cup (2400m).
Rawiller had Zavite just behind the leaders in the running line when they passed the post on the first occasion.
He was then able to get him to roll up to the leaders near the turn and from there the result was never in doubt.
"It was an excellent ride," Cummings said.
"He had him in the right spot and got him going when we had planned. Everything went as we wanted it."
From the time Cummings purchased Zavite as a yearling he had ambitions to run him over two miles.
"I basically bought him to win a Melbourne Cup. Things went wrong this year, this was supposed to be his year. But it didn't work out," he said.
"He had a muscle tear in his hindquarter after he ran in the Bart Cummings of all things and that buggered him for the campaign."
"We then put him away and sent him to the water walker for ten weeks to keep the fitness in him to make this campaign possible."
Cummings paid tribute to the Zabeel gelding who he described as a tough competitor who just loved to win.
"He was born to race," Cummings added with a laugh. "He's a tough old horse."
It was a welcome homecoming for Cummings who was born and bred in the area and gained great satisfaction winning South Australia's most famous race.
There were stages during the race according to Rawiller that things seemed to be going too well.
"Everything was just going perfect. I was just waiting for something bad to happen," he said.
"I'm just so happy for the horse.
"He's been such a good horse to me."
At the end of the tough two mile contest the well backed Zavite ($6.50-$5 eq fav) held a 2-1/2 margin over Kerdem ($15).
The other equal favourite, Mick Kent's Banana Man ($6-$5), was third, another two lengths back.
